Trade with ~Crowbitten who wanted me to draw her character Somi. For those who are unfamiliar, Somi is a 14 year old autistic girl; her mother is Klaa, a human who has been modified via experimental drugs that were meant to save her life, but apparently caused genetic deformities that transforms her into a were-creature periodically. Somi inherited these traits; however, Somi's trasformation is triggered by her hormones. In other words, when it's Somi's time of the month, she transforms into the caniform you see in the picture and goes on an uncontrollable feeding frenzy (usually the target being people).

That transformation aspect was what I was attempting to get at in the picture... but I think I failed. It just kinda looks like Somi's being stabbed or something. To be honest, I was trying to color this picture fully, and the I think the effects I was trying to implement got the point across better, but I couldn't get it the way I wanted in the long run, so I gave up on the coloring half-way through and settled for this weird sepia-photo-ish effect. I'm beginning to think I'm really not cut out for this whole digital coloring thing at all.

from my perspective, you haven't failed...slightly off the mark, yes, but not failed.

I saw the idea you were running with and in that, you were going great.

You cut the creature head by a solid line, rather use a gradient effect, so it blends more from the girl into her transformation.

I'm also trying my hand and attempting to be a digital painter, to be honest, my first taste of photoshop was 3 years ago and at the time, I thought, 'dude, this is as cool as ms paint!'

...enough said.

I spend my days, going through deviant art, seeing what other artists are working on and how they've finalized their pieces and learn from them. I am self taught A LOT of practice and am still not there yet.

Tell you what, if you agree with what I've said, or I have (I hope) inspired you to carry on attempting your digital painter side, add me to your dA watch and see what I'm uploading this week.

I really like the perspective you chose on the human Somi's face, it's a pretty tough one too, and you pulled it off well. I could tell right away what you were going for. I think the reason it looks a bit off is because the caniform side of her looks more emotional due to the face being wrinkled from the stress of pulling muscles, while the human Somi's isn't as exaggerated. Still, I really like this picture, even if you meant to do more for it. And I really like your digital coloring, maybe you had a slump or something :< Don't give up trying!

Thanks for the words. :)

I know as much as the next guy that practice makes perfect. I suppose I just need to be a little more patient with myself.
:iconcorkscrew-reality:
You have know idea how many preliminary pictures it took me to get the perspective right. >.> Lol, but I guess it paid off?

Thanks. Personally, I think it looks off because there really is no transition between the two characters; it resembles more what I did in Leigh's trade than a transformation sequence. I was going to put a lot more lighting effects to make it look like the creature was emerging than just being behind the girl. But yeah. Really, I think all I need is to have more patience with a picture and experimenting with it to discover better techniques.

Lol yeah the many preliminary sketches paid off. Oh yeah I see how you meant for the coloring to be, that sounds haaaard D8.
If we were always happy with everything we created then we'd never improve! I agree though, finding better technique is the whole shabang. When I used to shade with the smudge tool....*horror* but now things are easier and look better, since I've gotten my tablet. I need to post more...since that sounds kinda like an empty statement from me :P lol

The more I look at it, the more it seems that the canid is having an internal struggle somehow. Like Somi is watching in the back of her mind, but can't control herself when she is finally transformed. It is really good. Somi the girl seems like she is releasing this pent up beast inside of her. You did a really great job. Don't kick yourself lol.

i like how it came out.
rarely does anyone completely love something they put up. then when that happens they look back on it the next day and want to rip it apart. lol. so don't worry.
i think it came out really good and can only imagine how many preliminary sketches you've gone through. you pulled off a tough perspective but i think you may have made her jaw line too far down her neck. i think that her jaw line would be angled toward her ear before it bends up, like on the animal transforming.
